Descaling System Products

The steel industry is under pressure to supply higher quality products in order to compete in the steel commodities market today. This high quality is achieved with the best descale processing of the steel slab as it passes through the rolling mill in order to create the best surface finish on the steel.

In order to obtain this highest surface quality, the descaling process must perform at its best throughout the total length of the product. This puts the following demands on the descale system:

  • Create the best descale impingement with the least amount of water
  • Deliver the highest pressure possible to the descale headers
  • Maintain this high pressure throughout the strip length
  • Work with non-lubricated raw descale water fluid media
  • Maintain mandatory reliability with descale contaminated fluid

All of these items must be met with dependability for continuous production with the least amount of down time for the rolling mills.

Hunt has developed a selection of critical valve products within a descale system that meets these requirements and have proven themselves through 90 years of dependable performance operating at most of the major steel producers of the world. These critical valves range from the Descale Spray Valves to the Pump By-Pass Valves and Header Pre-fill Valves.

Hunt owes it’s major success to our first original design of valves built with a “hollow drilled radial ported plunger design” back in 1919. Today’s generation of this unique design creates many advantages from zero leakage to quick and economical maintenance of the valve. The Hunt plunger design eliminates the problems associated with poppet design valves. Poppet valves have certain advantages in simple applications, but the continuous and fast on/off cycling for the descale spray valve system application only creates excessive shock within the system. Hunt plunger valves eliminate the shock effect with the opening and closing of the graduated slots in the plunger. All Hunt cycling valves use this time proven design for the best reliability.

Descale Spray Valves

Descale Spray Valves are required for positive on/off control of the high-pressure water flow to the descale spray headers on the mill line. Pre-Fill Valves

Pre-Fill Valves give you on/off control of the existing descale water for pre-filling the spray headers to prevent shock within the descale system when the main descale spray valves are opened. Pressure Breakdown Orifices

A Pressure Breakdown Orifice is required to control the fluid flow rate for pre-filling the headers. This orifice is located in the by-pass line around the descale spray valve. Strainers

Strainers within a descale system should be included for each descale spray valve for large filtration of the high-pressure water (700 micron level). The Strainers are installed prior to the descale spray valves to protect the internals of the valve from large debris and prevent contaminants from interruption (clogging) of the fine and intricately designed descale header nozzles. Isolation Valves

Isolation Valves are required for positive shut-off of portions of the descale system for maintenance on the system. The valves are located at pump discharge, the accumulator discharge, and the descale spray valve header lines. Accumulator Safety Shut-Off Valves

Every descale accumulator system requires a Safety Shut-Off Valve to prevent release of the accumulator air charge. The Hunt standard Descale Valve has been used for years as an Accumulator Safety Shut-Off Valve. It was specifically designed for two-way flow direction through the valve. The metal seat eliminates the possibility of seal damage.
